Just steps away from Busch Gardens and the rest of the world off North 46th St I took a step back in time to the 16th century and a meeting with Queen Catherine Parr at the Bay Area Renaissance Festival. The Festival opens this weekend – February 18th – and will be open weekends through April 2nd. Those weekends have fun themes like Chocolate Fantasy in Piper’s Valley, the Barbarian Brewfest, and since it’s Tampa you have to include our favorite scalawags – Pirates! Their weekend is themed for Pirates and Pets.

It’s really a very good reason to enjoy funnel cakes any number of ways, anything deep-fried and on a stick and then get on any one of 115 rides on the largest midway in the US – that’s this year’s Florida State Fair! I spent an afternoon at the fair getting to know some of the good folks who spend a lot of time on the road to make sure we get those treats, and they all have a great story for why they do what they do. There’s Mama Jane who made the award-winning Cheesy Fried Enchilada Funnel Cake; [More]

Not that we need a reason to enjoy a fine craft brew, but when a mayoral proclamation is involved it’s a necessity. This Wednesday is Florida’s second annual official Craft Beer Day and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn made it official with a proclamation issued at the beginning of the month. Mayor Buckhorn is a fan of the industry himself, and I had the chance to speak with him when Ulele created a lager just for his honor.
The Brewmasters Club is a Tampa based tech startup and developer of the Brewmasters Club mobile app which customizes craft beer pairings with everyday [More]

Valentine’s Day is next week, but this week is known as “Dump Your Significant Jerk” week. Why? Well it seems a lot of people purposely break up the week before Valentine’s Day to avoid buying presents. Really? Yes, really. But you’d never do that, right? Just in case you want to ‘fess up, take the new Dove Poll and tell us! It’s totally anonymous and you may be among friends.
But if you’d like to improve your odds at love this month, here’s your chance to enter and win a fun one from the Ann Kelly’s Kitchen Collection. “Making Love [More]

Despite the challenge of dealing with a chronic illness like lupus, the past few months have been some of the best in my life. No, it’s not the cooler weather although that helps. It’s the changes I’ve made thanks to Charlotte Mapes, RD, LDN, the Wellness Dietitian for BayCare Fitness Center- Carillon, and Jim Healy, a very inspirational personal trainer at BayCare that I’ll share more about later. It’s the fact that this one-time stress eater does not turn to food like I used to. That was such an easy excuse. Taking back control and turning toward a clean eating [More]

Heading out to Disneyland soon? The California home of Mickey has ‘fessed up to some of its secret menu items and they look pretty tasty. It was just a matter of taking what they already had and re-imagined their use. Imagineers are good at that in the many kitchens across the park. Take a look at what’s new while I dream of a Mac-n-Cheese bread bowl, along with a little history.
Heads up to those of us who love to bake and treasure the taste of real vanilla. When I stopped in at Savory Spice Friday afternoon to stock jup [More]

Now this is my kind of start to the weekend – With that big game coming up next weekend you know we just lose our respective minds when it comes to who can top who in tailgating. Grab the tums and see how the battle between Bon Appétit and Epicurious to create nachos featuring 50 ingredients in honor of Super Bowl 50 turned out. I’m sure you could beat them both.
I’m as guilty as you when it comes to putting things in the fridge when they don’t need to be there – tomatoes for instance. But you might [More]

I caught up with Michelle Dudash, author “Clean Eating for Busy Families” once again in Ann Kelly’s Kitchen to get a little advice on my own path to a clean eating lifestyle. It’s the single best thing I’ve done for myself since I pledged to make this year one of my best and healthiest. It’s working! I’ve enjoyed recipes from her book like the Olive Oil Cure Summer Vegetable Sandwiches and have shed around ten pounds with the helpful advice of Charlotte Mapes, RD, LDN, the Wellness Dietitian for BayCare Fitness Center- Carillon. I know that when I stopped thinking “diet” and [More]

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Girl Scout Cookie Time! And here at the Dove and in Ann Kelly’s Kitchen I’m especially lucky since one of my coworker’s little girl is a Girl Scout and there’s an order blank just a quick skip down the hall. Miss Rachel Siegel is my conduit to all that is sweet. There’s a few new items this year with S’mores cookies and gluten free Toffee cookies. Remember to support your local troop.

It’s the question that has everyone madly debating the answer this morning – are you Team Crunchy or Team Smooth? Happy National Peanut Butter Day!
Personally I’m Team Almond Butter but it’s a good in the world of nuts today. My almond butter is the raw kind with no added salt or sugar and it’s delicious. But why not take Ann Kelly’s Kitchen Poll this morning and tell us what your favorite is.
