I made it just in time for the sale tax holiday for hurricane prep supplies. It’s over now but that shouldn’t stop you from making sure you have enough supplies to get you through another hurricane season. If Irma taught us anything it pays to have the most important items ready to go like a generator, food and water, and anything that uses batteries like weather radios, fans and lights. I was without power for eight days and let me tell you, opening that fridge and freezer? Nasty!
Take a look at the Dove Hurricane Guide so you know exactly [More]

Hurricane season 2018 didn’t wait until the official start date of June 1st; Alberto dumped plenty of rain on the bay area leading to some flooding and minor power outages. But if you were caught without backup of some sort you may not have learned a lesson from last year when Hurricane Irma devastated so much of Florida. It’s time to stock up and tax advantage of the sales tax holiday which runs from June 1st-June 7th and covers a wide range of items. We can show you the complete list here along with items that are not [More]

Why in the world would I get up at 7 am on a Sunday morning when it’s pouring rain to get doughnuts? One simple reason – Voodoo Donut, now open at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk. Oh I tried to head over when I got here Saturday night in another monsoon that only Florida can deliver with such incredible timing but was way too tired from an almost three hour trip over. Nicely flooded off ramps added to the thrill. Walking to my room I saw so many people coming back with slightly damp boxes Voodoo Doughnut boxes and big smiles. They [More]

There are no two ways about it. When it comes to barbecue we just can’t get enough. But if you’ve never lifted the lid on a smoker or grill where do you start? Let me suggest the newest book from five-time James Beard Award winner Steven Raichlen. “Project Fire” will walk you through what you need to know to take the next tailgate party or picnic to delicious new heights. Steven had me at the recipe of Salted Slab Brownie S’mores. But there’s more to consider than the calorie count. What’s your grilling fuel of choice, what method will [More]

There were two things that happened the day my tired, old Samsung S5 crashed and went to Android heaven. It made me finally get a new one which of course I’d been putting off for obviously way too long, The next thing? That horrible pit of your stomach feeling that some things that weren’t compatible with the new system were gone. Oh yes, you know that one. All my notes from a lovely visit to Hillel Academy were nowhere to be found.
But let’s add one more very good thing. The impression left by the staff, the students and their dedication to the [More]

My first reaction was most likely the same as yours – keep gummy beers out of the kids hands! But this new product is completely non-alcoholic, you only get the taste. It’s part of a promotion from Corona for Cinco de Mayo. They went on sale at Nordstrom and the Sugarfina site earlier this month. But I’ll bet I also know what else you’re thinking – why buy those when you can make your own “drunken gummies” Those definitely need to be kept of the kids hands.
Another recall and this is another one to get out of the [More]

The most beloved books in my personal library are the ones with the pages perhaps a little smudged from the banana bread I was baking, or a page that is bent for a convenient bookmark to be read later. But how about a book that is designed to be turned into something wonderfully useful? That’s the concept behind “Turn This Book Into a Beehive” from four-time Emmy Award winner Lynn Burnelle. Lynn writes for Bill Nye The Science Guy and has four Emmy’s to show for her work. Lynn makes science fun, and when it comes to bees, makes a lasting [More]

Hello all! A few items to catch up on in Ann Kelly’s Kitchen. Some nasty things you don’t want in your fridge start us off. Romaine lettuce is under recall that may have contributed to an EColi outbreak. It was grown out in Arizona, and has NOT been shipped to Florida. But this is a good one to pass along and make sure your friends and family get rid of it right away. Find something else for the BLT for now.
Are secret menus just an urban legend or just something plain cool to discover? Probably both, but I can tell [More]

This recall is for raw pet foods from Arrow Reliance, and involves multiple brands that include Milo’s Kitchen, Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and ZooLogics Natural Dog Food. The FDA calls it an “ongoing pattern of pathogenic contamination” detecting E. coli and salmonella in samples. We have that full list for you here along with the recall dates from the FDA. There was an earlier recall on the 22nd for Milo’s. Take that food back to the store where you bought it or dispose of it safely.

I’m surprised I don’t see this more to be honest. If you happen to drop in at the restaurant in Virginia you’ll notice something new on the menu – sign language. The owner recognized the need since one of their servers are deaf and it’s pretty helpful and an opportunity to learn something new for customers. Not a bad idea, right?
The first day of Spring is next Tuesday, March 20th and if you happen to find yourself near a Rita’s Italian Ice between noon and 9 pm, how about a free treat? Oh, and Dairy Queen will [More]
